The Year of the Sonata!

 Hello Piano People!

It has been a long time since I have posted!  I have  been so busy with my 6 grandchildren - soon to be 7!

My two biggest joys:  Grandchildren and teaching piano to all my wonderful students - some of whom are actually my grandchildren!

I am going to start posting more information here. It might be easier for all of us than my random emails!

First of all, I am so honored to be your teacher!  I have been teaching piano for nearly 30 years now. And I learn something new every day.  I enjoy exploring the world of piano music with my students of various level.

This year, the Community Music Center where I do most of my teaching, is allowing me to focus on intermediate through advanced students. I still teach a few continuing beginning classes and labs, but I am primarily teaching one-on-one. Although I miss my beginners and their classes, it is a dream come true to go up a level and explore more complex music.

My students are rising to the challenge!

This year I am dubbing "The Year of the Sonata".  We will be studying sonata form and each student will be mastering a complete sonata or sonatina (a small sonata) to be performed at the end of the year "Sonata Recital"

I will be sharing information about sonata form in their lessons and on this blog. We will even attempt to analyze our sonatas!

Coming up in the near future, are Winter Piano Recitals.  Friday, December 15th at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, December 16h at 5:30 p.m. Both will be held in the CMC Auditorium.

I will be asking parents to choose a recital date soon. Most of my students have chosen pieces they want to share. This recital will reflect the winter and musical pieces that speak to each student's soul! Plus, of course the mandatory reception with oodles of treats and cookies!

So, stay tuned!

I am excited about this year!

Peace and Joy,

Teacher Zita

Fall Term 2021

Hello Piano People!

There is another heat wave coming this weekend, just to remind us that, yes, it is still summer!

But September is just around the corner! Which means back to school and fall term piano lessons.

I will continue to teach lessons primarily from my home via Zoom. I'm actually quite enjoying teaching online.  Especially since I am Zma nanny for my 3 year old granddaughter,  (who will be 4 in September) and my grandtwins who will be 4 months September 18th!

I will also be teaching a few in-person group classes at the Community Music Center on Tuesdays. I will be teaching Zoom classes on Wednesday through the Community Music Center.

My hours for private Zoom lessons are Thursdays  3:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Fridays 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

I hope you are enjoying these final days of summer. Looking forward to more fun with piano!

Peace,

Teacher Zita

Fall Term Update

Hello Piano People!

When I last wrote to you about fall term, we were just dealing with the pandemic. Now we have wildfires!

2020 has been quite a year so far!

I want to let you know, I've had to do some restructuring of my schedule.

I will be babysitting my granddaughter on the weekends so her mom and dad can run their photography business. (Weddings are usually on the weekends!)

I am so eager to begin our performance group classes, especially since I do not know when, if ever the Community Music Center will re-open for onsite recitals!

I have put on my calendar the 3rd Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. for performance group. I will be leading them via Zoom.  I am sure those of you who are students will be patient with me the first time as we work out the glitches.

I will let you know more as we approach the first group. It will be Wednesday, October 21st. I will not be charging extra for these classes. But as I have had to increase my private lesson rate slightly, they will be included with your tuition.

I hope everyone considers taking part. It will be good motivation to work up a special piece and see some of your fellow piano students!

I hope you are all safe and well.

All this time at home may be giving us cabin fever, but it also gives us more time to practice!

Peace,

Teacher Zita

Fall Term 2020 News

Hello Piano People!

As we enter the final month of a very unique summer, I would like to give you an idea of what fall term might look like this year, as well as share some announcements.

In March, after the pandemic was in full swing, the Community Music Center closed. Most of you know that I taught piano in group classes and privately for a long time. 22 years to be exact. It was like I was losing my home when I was laid off! But compared to the alarming spread of the virus, it paled in comparison. My whole family self-isolated. I live in the basement of my daughter and son-in-law's home, where I set up a little music studio. I only have a digital electric piano at home, which is decent. But my preference is an acoustic upright. And for performance, there is nothing in this world like a Steinway grand piano.

Like the Steinway at the Music Center which sits in the auditorium on a stage. It is where I have held student recitals, solo concerts, chamber music concerts and where I have accompanied the Francis Street Singers in the weekly rehearsals and for performance. For over years.

Like everyone, the sudden changes in my life due to the pandemic cut deep. But I made the best of it. I started teaching my students online via Skype and Zoom. Then the board of directors at the Community Music Center made a microgrant available for those of us who teach CMC students who are on scholarship due to financial hardship. I also cut my rates to make lessons affordable during this time. And we are still here! Human beings, after all are highly adaptable.  We are survivors!

Many of my students are actually thriving! Especially my intermediate to advanced students. It is challenging for beginners since I am not there in person to show them the notes and how to properly use their fingers. But I have been making tutorial videos, which my students say are very helpful.

I want to thank all of you for being patient and flexible. Sometimes the internet signal is weak, and online lessons are challenging. Sometimes I am just not as organized as I could be due to my very cramped space. But there is always learning, music, laughs and a deep bonding that can only come between a student and a teacher who really cares.

Looking ahead to fall term: I still plan on creating performance groups via Zoom. But they will not happen until the first Saturday in October. I apologize. I also babysit my granddaughter full time. Her mom and dad had begun a little side photography business before the pandemic. And now, since they have more time on their hands, it is booming! I watch my granddaughter when they do photoshoots. Sometimes these involve long hours, especially weddings and out of town shoots. So, I am a bit weary. My granddaughter (Grace) will be 3 years old in one month. She is a precious ball of energy! All the more reason for me to get back to the gym if it ever opens back up!

Anyway, please put piano performance classes on your calendars, beginning the first Saturday in October. (10/03/20) at 2 p.m. We will get to know each other and play pieces we are working on. You can even have treats in your own home. Ask your parents. 😀

I feel like the performance groups will provide extra motivation for regular practice.

Speaking of which, I hope all my students are practicing daily. Even a short session daily will prove successful!

Also, I  have been talking to the assistant director of CMC about the future of the music center. It fate is sadly still up in the air. We are at the mercy of the City of Portland, which is struggling financially. They had hoped for an October opening, but this would still be online learning only. However, if it does open in October, I would be able to stream my lessons online from CMC using their equipment and pianos!

YAY!

And that is my news for now. I will try to send you regular updates. I so enjoy teaching and feel like my students are part of my family. Even when practicing is sparse, I enjoy visiting and talking about music with you. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Be safe and healthy! And practice your piano!

 Peace,

🎹 Teacher Zita

RECITAL SEASON!

Hello Piano People!

Here we are in November already!  Most people hurl themselves headlong into holiday thinking immediately after Halloween.  I actually heard my first Christmas carol on the radio yesterday. And my Starbucks cup was already in the Christmas spirit!

I think my favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. Time with family. Yummy food. Not too much stress.  What'st not to like?

But honestly, you know what I look forward to this time of year?

PIANO RECITALS!!

This year, I am hosting an end of term piano recital for my students at the Community Music Center on Sunday, December 10th.

There will be two sessions:

Session One
4:00-5:00 p.m. This session designed for younger, more beginning students.  There will be a reception at 5:00 with many goodies (bring some too if you're able!).

Session Two
6:00-7:00 p.m. This session is designed for older and/or more advanced students. There will be a reception at 7:00 with many goodies (bring some too if you're able!).

You can sign up for whichever session suits your student and/or schedule.  If you need help deciding, ask me!

Most of my students have chosen a recital piece already.  My beginning students will be chosing this week.

My recitals are fun!  We do not worry about mistakes.  But if there are any nerves, be assured I will be sitting right there next to you at the piano to help!

Students can dress however they are comfortable for being on stage. Some like to dress fancy, some like to just where comfortable clothes (like they wear to school).

Be yourself! :)

I also want to let you know, that I giving one of my family friendly, educational concerts.

I would love to see my students and their families at my concert!  I am really excited about featuring women composers and their male counterparts!

Happy Thanksgiving and Piano News!

Dear Piano Students:

As I ponder what I am thankful for this year, the first thing I think of is my family. Next is you all!  I love teaching piano and I love you all like you are my family!

I am up late the night before Thanksgiving actually practicing.Yes, teachers practice too!

I am playing the piano for a homeless Thanksgiving lunch tomorrow before I get together with my family.

I am going to begin the program with "Imagine" by John Lennon. One of my favorite pieces. And very appropriate for our world today, I might add!

Here is a rough little youtube video of me practicing Imagine on my dinky little keyboard at home:

Also, the end of fall term is upon us!  My last day teaching will be Tuesday, December 13th.

End of term recital is Sunday, December 11th at 5:30. Please come about 20 minutes early. Bring your music, your family and treats to share!

Please let me know if you plan on playing. I love recitals!

Winter term will start up January 2nd.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your families!

Peace,

Teacher Zita

Summertime!

Hello Piano People!

I hope you enjoyed your Memorial Day! I am very grateful to all who have served and are serving our country.

It is going to be a hot one today.  I heard 90 degrees, and it is only the last day of May! I guess summer really is just around the corner.

I am finalizing my summer piano lesson schedule. I can still make room for a few more students, so talk to me if you would like a spot! :)

I will be giving an end of summer student piano recital on Sunday, August 28th at 5:30 at the Community Music Center.

This recital will be smaller than usual. I am working on memorization in my own practice. If time permits, I will play a piece that I have been working on - by memory!  This has been a weak point in my musicality.

I am a teacher, but always a student!

I am looking forward to a music filled summer.

Talk to you soon!

Peace,

Teacher Zita

Blues Piano Summer Camp!

I am thrilled to say that I am able to offer a piano blues camp this summer at the Community Music Center!  It will be at the end of summer rather than beginning because of scheduling conflicts. But we are in!

This is one of my favorite classes to teach. No music reading. We learn the blues scale and chords. We listen, create and jam!  Most of all we have fun!  Here is the blurb that will appear in the CMC catalog:

"Piano Blues    Jefferson         M-F     12:00 PM-2:00 PM   4          8/22-8/25 age 9-13        Playing the 12-Bar Blues makes you happy! Use simple chords & scales to create original compositions at the keyboard. Listen, improvise, jam with others, & solo in this uniquely American style. Pick up basic music theory & history along the way while gaining confidence in practice & performance. Prerequisite - one year of group lessons or the equivalent. This class uses digital pianos that simulate acoustic grands. Students bring a nutritious, peanut free snack each day."

End of Year Recital - Early this Year!

I have an early date set for the end of year recital. It will be April 24, 2016.
There will be one recital at 5:30 for my younger and more beginning students.
Another recital at 7:00 for my older and more advanced students.

I had a June date scheduled, but discovered that Portland Public Schools releases for
summer a week before, so I didn't want to miss any students due to vacation!

Usually during Winter Term, I focus on theory, notereading and basic skills. Which
we are doing.  But since the recital is earlier this year, we will be picking recital pieces
in the next few weeks.

Also, I wanted to let you know that my chamber music group, Portland Chamber Music
has some exciting concerts coming up. Would love to see you there!

Sightreading, Recitals and Chamber Music, Oh My!!

Hello Piano People!

Fall is really here! There is a light drizzle outside. I just got back from a lovely walk on the Springwater Corridor Trail near my home. Leaves are changing color and dropping. This is my
favorite time of year!

This term I have been focusing on sight reading. Sight reading is seriously one of my favorite past times! I know I don't share this with much of the world's musical population. But I would like to share my knowledge with my students.

I have heard plenty of groans and moans from my students when I told them we are going to be working on sight reading. But now that I have been consistently working with most of them for the past month, I am seeing some remarkable progress!

If you are a parent, ask you child about "SBLAR"! That is my very own creation and method.

Any piece of music is acceptable for sight reading. I like to challenge myself with really difficult music. But at first, it is best to start at reading music slightly BELOW your level.

The most important element is RHYTHM. You can miss notes, but you may not stop and correct them. Try not to miss a beat.

Get hold of a metronome. If you don't have one, there are many apps online.  Set it to a nice slow steady beat (60 bpm is usually good).

I really like Bartok's Mikrokosmos for my students.  Starting with book one is appropriate for all levels.

http://www.amazon.com/Mikrokosmos-Pink-English-French-Hungarian/dp/1423493044/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1445287955&sr=8-1&keywords=bartok+mikrokosmos+volume+1

I've included a photo of the book above and a link to Amazon.com. But you can also try to find it in a local music store, i.e. Portand Music.

We will also be talking about performance pieces for our upcoming recital on December 20th. Mark your calendars.

And finally, I have joined a wonderful new chamber music group: Portland Chamber Music.

It is led by my friend, Anya an opera trained soprano from Russia. We are also joined by Lluis, a french horn player from Spain, Alaine, a lovely young clarinetist, and my friend Jon on cello.

Our events are free. I love seeing my students and friends in the audience!

Fall Term and Recital Dates!

I found this photo on: http://faithhopeandlove-dawn.blogspot.com/2011/10/autumn-leaves.html

NOTE:  The blog I found this picture on has a fascinating segment on why leaves change colors !  I loved this: "Have to have consistent rain also because if there’s not enough rain the colors aren’t as vibrant & vivid".  Yes! Rain! Please!

 Hi Piano People!

Wow! Fall!  My favorite time of the year, just around the corner!

I hope this means the end of the hot weather! Not to whine, but it was a bit too hot for me this summer.

But I do hope all of my students and their families had fun, relaxing times!

I will be taking next week off to rest and plan for fall term.

Fall term will begin Saturday, September 5th, 2015. Labor Day is September 7th.  So if you are doing family things, we can always start your lesson the following week.

I have scheduled my student piano recitals for the year. So save the dates!

End of Fall Term Piano Recital
Sunday, December 20th:  4:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

End of Spring Term Piano Recital
Sunday, June 12th:  4:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

As usual, I prefer to have the younger and beginning students perform at the earlier recitals.

As we get back into the swing of things, remember to make time in your busy schedules for piano practice.  I do not have a set time requirement. That depends on your family schedule, level and musical goals.  But I do recommend daily practice.  We can talk about a sample practice routine at your lessons.

I also find that people (including myself) put more effort into a musical piece that they really love. So as we start to think about recital, I would welcome suggestions for your performance pieces. Or I can just play a bunch of pieces and you can pick!

It is my desire to share with you the joy I experience in making music.  It has been my passion for over 50 years and I hope it will be yours too!

Happy Back to School!
See you soon.

On Performance

Teacher Zita and Emily, a proud performer. (Emily performed the Theme from Star Wars and the them from the Largo by Dvorak)
Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.
--YODA, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace*

I am reflecting on the wonderful performances of my students at the end of the year recital I held at the Community Music Center on Sunday.
I sit with my students on stage until they are ready to go it alone. Even as they get more advanced, they often need me to turn pages. It is a lovely, but surreal experience. I sit and bask in their music. And often, little snippets of our conversations from our lessons come to me. Because after all, I am sitting at their side, just as if we are in a piano lesson!

I was so proud of each and every one of my students. And as I congratulated them, I heard some remarks about "mistakes" and "mess ups".

Were there wrong notes played? Yes! Of course! We are, after all, imperfect humans. Not robots.

Would I enjoy a concert of robots playing each note perfectly. NO!

Because with each performance, we offer ourself up to the audience. We make ourself vulnerable. We are not only sharing the music we learned from the page, that was written by a composer, often hundreds of years before us. We also share a little bit of ourselves.

I have heard "Fur Elise" by Beethoven played hundreds of times. Maybe thousands. And it is never played exactly the same.

What I experienced at my recital was humanity.  Beautiful people who had spent time working hard on mastering a piece of music. And then sharing this through the vessel of their human flesh to a very appreciative audience.

Please do not regret mistakes. Instead, celebrate the beautiful music between the mistakes.

You deserve applause just for putting yourself onstage.

And I, as your teacher, applaud you from deep in my heart.

Love to you all and a happy summer!

Teacher Zita :)

Summer Piano Lessons

Hello Piano People!

Summer has arrived!  I saw so many kids out today on my morning walk.  Birds are singing. And today is not too hot! :)

But it is supposed to be a hotter than usual summer. For those of you who are not fond of the heat (like me), maybe even you get the summer blues, fear not!

I still have room in Blues Piano Camp at the Community Music Center.  Numbers are rather low, so I've decided to lower the age requirement. Nine year-old to twelve year-old pianists with at least a year of lessons are welome. We learn the blues scale, the twelve bar blues, the history of blues and we jam! It's a lot of fun!

If you do not meet the age requirement, or the dates of the camp are not convenient, I can teach blues in our private lessons.

I still have some spots open in my schedule.

Happy Summer!

End of Year Piano Recital

The Frances Street Singers and Teacher Zita

Wow! This has been a busy year!  I realize I haven't updated this blog recently. I do have a new blog called soulrunnings.blogspot.com. I talk about my training for a 5K coming up in the fall. But I also talk about music, so check it out! :)

Yesterday was the 60th Anniversary Celebration of the Community Music Center. We held performances at Reed College.  A wonderful event! Several of my students performed and it was all lovely! A special shout out to Alvin Chan, Lukas Ward, Kyle Jones, Max Thompson and Karissa Thomas! Also, the Francis Street Singers, the adult choir led by the wonderful Tracey Edson and accompanied by yours truly 11 Gypsy Dances by Brahms, and How Lovely is Thy Dwelling Place from the Brahms Requiem, among other selections. It was pure magic!

I have moved back to Portland.  I am doing more performing! And now I have time for a few more students!

Speaking of which, it is nearly time for my end of year Piano Recital!

Very excited! Love recitals!

Date: June 14, 2015
Time: 4:30 and 6:00 p.m.
Place: Community Music Center

Please call, email or talk to me if you need more information.

Otherwise, enjoy the Portland heat wave and keep making music!
